Importance of Protective Clothing for Motorcyclists

By Steve Scoritz

It's always a very good idea to be wearing the right clothes when riding a motorcycle. Studies have shown that while many motorcyclists wear hemlets and leather jackets, many do not actually wear the correct motorcycle pants. Often is the case that the clothing does little to help the motorcyclist in the event of an accident even though most accidents do not happen while riding fast. There are a number of different safety standard around the world, though the European standards are by far the most stringent.

Motorcyclist clothing protects them injury in case of a crash, protects them from the weather, draws attention to the rider increasing their visibility, and can be used as statement of style. Studies show that injured riders wearing leathers spent 7 days less in the hospital and went back to work earlier than unprotected riders. Motorcycle accidents involve a rider sliding or tumbling on the road surface.

Beside protecting the rider from heat stress, cold stress and wet stress, the most notable advantage of wearing gloves is protecting the hands in the event of crash. The gloves offer carbon fiber knuckles protection and the wrists of the gloves are also protective in the case of shear related damage.

Motorcyclists suits are designed to protect the most vunerable zones of the body including the front knee, elbows and shoulders. It is important that these areas of the suit are manufactured to assist in the case of a high impact.

Motorcycle boots are usually made reinforced with plastic caps around the ankles and toe areas. Some riders even wear boots with heels to rest on the on the foot pegs. The boots are flexible and are oil resistance to keep the rider griped on the peg. The stiff sole and ankle prevent crushing or shearing injuries.

To provide as much protection as possible for the head, it is recommended that motorcyclists use helmets. The helmets are designed with a dual layer protection system. The outer layer is constructed using a hard shatter resistant material and the inner layer is quite often manufactured from a foam material to prevent damage to the skull.

Protective clothing for motorcycle riders must fit properly. Clothing is designed to fit and cover specific regions of the body. Ill fitted clothing can shift and not protect the right zone. In the case of a crash, loose clothing can cause more damage than actually protect. Pieces should zippered together for a perfect fit.

There are many motorcycle clothing designers such as Dainese and Alpinestarts that are a statement of style and at the same time being highly rated safety gear by many riders.

Recent studies have revealed that riders that are well suited with the correct safety clothing have a much better chance of surviving an impact than those who don't.
