Good Goldfish Care

By John Smith

The most common and rewarding of all pets is the goldfish. Visually appealing, their care and maintenance is rather easy, goldfish are a great choice for a pet. Though they live in a tiny bowl and can take care of themselves there are still many things an owner needs in order to maintain their goldfish so they live a long life.

Goldfish care and maintenance that is done right will lead to a long and healthy life for your pet goldfish. For starters, you need to have the proper supplies if you want your fish to live a long life. Make sure you get the right fish tank. A small tank is good for a small fish and a large tank for large or multiple fish. Don't put a lot of fish into a small tank or they will not live a long time. Moreover, make sure you get a filter too.

You should keep the tank out of direct sunlight as it promotes the growth of algae and overheats the water that harms gold fish as they are cold water fish by nature. Cleanliness and maintaining hygiene levels inside the tank is also important. Tanks should be thoroughly washed with plenty of water to avoid the presence of any soap residue. The gravel should also be cleaned and dried vigorously with paper towels.

The water in your fish's tank is very important. Fish can adapt to a variety of tap water so it is ok to use tap water. When you put the water into the tank, make sure it is at room temperature. Anything too hot or cold is not good for the fish. You should change the water every few weeks to keep it fresh and free of bacteria.

Goldfish are simple eaters. You can buy flakes or pellets at the pet store and it just pour them into the tank. Be sure not to overfeed your fish as it will cause extra bacteria and waste into the tank and that will cause your fish to die. Only feed your fish once a day to ensure it is healthy and lives a long time.

Goldfish can die easily if they are not taken care of well. A lot of times people forget to change or clean the water, overfeed them or just forget about them. Good goldfish care is essential if you want your fish to live a long time and avoid flushing him down the toilet. The life span of your gold fish is entirely determined by the quality of your care you give it. Remember the rules above and you will be enjoying your goldfish for a very long time to come.
