Japan Snowboarding Hotspots

By Kylee Pan

Snowboarding has quickly become a favorite sport for many Japanese. This can evidently be seen in the crowds packing the numerous ski resorts all over the country. Considering that there are over 600 such resorts in the country and most of them are fit to the brim, you can fully understand the growing popularity of the sport.

Its popularity is not just restricted to the locals. Many tourists from every part of the world have made the effort to travel far and wide to Japan's ski resorts just to snowboard. The experience of doing so in a foreign country and having a taste of its culture makes it even more exciting.

Snowboard is now more popular with the Japanese than skiing. This winter sport can be enjoyed by both the young and old, while the cool factor guarantees a sizable following with the younger generation. It might be more difficult to master than skiing, but the thrill is also in overcoming the challenge.

There are many popular ski resorts in Japan, but the most popular ones include those in Tokyo and Hokkaido. The ones in outlying Tokyo are convenient for the inhabitants in the country's capital, while Hokkaido offers a more scenic environment with better courses for the experienced snowboarder.

Iwappara Ski Resort is just an hour and a half's train ride from Tokyo and is one of the busiest ski resorts in the country. Thousands make the trip each day to indulge in their hobby. Iwappara offers everything a snowboarder would need for a day trip, but it lacks the more sophisticated terrains and pipes that experienced snowboarders prefer.

The first ski resort in Hokkaido that is a must visit is the Rusutsu. It is renowned for having one of the largest skiing areas in Japan and this is like a Christmas gift for every snowboarder who makes the effort to get there. One can also enjoy classic resort facilities like golf courses for the relaxing break in between practicing their pipe tricks.

Hokkaido's Niseko Ski Resort is another popular destination for all snowboarders. It has enjoyed tremendous success every year and many fans have voted it as their favorite boarding hotspot to go in Japan. This is mainly due to the top quality snow powder that the area has, making snowboarding a true pleasure.

Iwappara, Rusutsu and Niseko ski resorts are all worth visiting if you intend to visit Japan for a snowboarding vacation. There are many others that you can include in your itinerary but the three are must visits for any fan worth his or her salt. You will not leave the country feeling shortchanged after the experience.
