Koi Carp Information

By Brad Koi Kooper

Hello! My name is Brad Kooper and I have been an avid keeper of Koi for nearly 30 years now. Aswell as keeping Koi I now like to share my knowledge and help others to care for Koi.

You may already know that Koi first came from central Europe and South East Asia. These days you can find Koi in every country you go to due to their popularity.

From the knowledge I have gained I found out that Koi were first bred as pets in Japan when they noticed that some of the Koi had beautiful patches of colour on them.

It's wonderful to know that in Japan they see Koi as representatives of love and affection. The meaning of Koi in Japan is carp, this is why we call them Koi carp.

There are many different varieties of Koi and thousands of colours but the common Koi colours are white, blue, red, yellow and a creamy colour.

Koi are often bred by experts to get the wonderful colours we see today however to get those amazing colours the breeders often have to go through hundreds or thousands to get those pedigree Koi. The ones that don't make the cut are usually fed to other fish.

It's amazing to know that wild Koi carp are found in every country on Earth, this is because they are very adaptive and can survive lots of climates. But Koi can actually be a neusance in the wild because they will stir up all of the sedaments in ponds which will make it impossible for other life to drink.

In some countries they are trying to get rid of the Koi from the ponds to save the other animals, they are spending a lot of money to do this but the Koi are very resilient and these countries are not having much success.

In the wild Koi are easy targets for predators due to their bright colourings, their usual predators are animals like foxes, badgers and cats.

If you have these sorts of animals near where you live then it may be a good idea to cover your pond with a net to stop them being attacked.

Koi are fantastic to keep and area pleasure to be around when it comes to feeding time they are often very active.
