Tuning Your Own Mountain Bike

By Jackie Michaels

Hurray, you have purchased a mountain bike, now the important thing is to know the tune-up your mountain bike parts. Some of the parts that you specifically will want to know how to tune up are discussed here. A large portion of tuning up these parts is simply done by keeping an eye on them.

For example, bike chains require grease on it to perform function properly. You can check to see if the chain needs adjustment, and it is very ease to done by tightly pulling on the chain and then counting 20 links. After you stretch it, measure the distance from pin to pin with ruler, if the measurement increased from 10 inches, it is better to replace the chain.

If the chain in length is fine, all you have to do is simply clean it and keep it like new. Citrus solvent and an old toothbrush can be used to clean the chain. Dip the chain in liquid and scrub it until it's clean. Now tune up the chain rings and check out the bent teeth. If there are some bent teethes then use the adjustable wrench to fix these teeth.

If you want to get the parts of your mountain bike in shape like the wheel and the breaks, there are some other things to keep in your mind. To check the wheels and breaks, simply apply the front brakes while rolling the bike upward and backward. While doing this play should not be occurred. If there is a play then you might need to tight the headset after loosing the bolts.

Checking the hubs should be quite simple. All you have to do is to push the wheel hard enough to move it spin around to or three times. As long as the bike's wheel spins smoothly you are in good shape. Take a notice and make sure while spinning the wheel that there is no lateral movement.

If you generally want to know that how to keep your bike tuned up, stand at front of your bike and check the loose bolts and tighten them. In routine riding bolts come loose by the passage of time. Also check the other parts like bottle cage and the chain ring bolts.

Lubrication is important. One thing you might to do is put a light coat of grease on the bike's saddle rails. As well as most likely it better off if you lubricate the front suspension for sliders. After greasing clean out all grit that might be lodged next to the seal.
