How to Pick the Right Bike

By Patricia Walker

Picking the right bike shouldn't be too difficult, but it may be wise to do your homework first. Most often, people will start their search with one idea in mind and end up choosing a completely different bike. There are a few factors to consider that can help you make an informed decision.

Who are you? I don't mean this in an existential way, but more in terms of why you are looking for a bike. It is a safe bet to assume that if you have been a bike enthusiast for 20 years, you already know what you like and don't like. What are you planning to do with your bike? Are you looking to commute to work or cruise the board walk? Training for a bike race or off roading? Take an honest assessment of your biking plans before you begin your bike search.

Consider how much money you want to spend. Bicycles vary greatly in price depending on how specialized you want to get. A high end mountain bike with expensive components can easily cost around 4 thousand dollars! That is more than my first 2 cars, combined. There is no way a beginner would need that much bike. Figure out a sensible price range before you go shopping.

What kind of retailer should you shop with? Big box stores can offer some really cheap pricing on bikes and accessories. However, if you plan on keeping the bike for a few years or you are a quality over price shopper, you may want to consider a bike shop. Bike shops offer expertise and advice that can really ensure that you get the right bike with the right fit. In addition, internet based bike shops can offer expertise as well as great pricing. If you can wait a day or two for shipping, online bike shops can be an excellent option.

Get in the comfort zone!! There are few things as frustrating as buying a new product and finding that it is generally unusable. A new sweater, shoes, or a new bike that is uncomfortable to use. How does your body feel on the bike? Do you prefer to lean forward or sit up straight? Do you want a big comfy seat or a thin sleek seat for racing? Know your zone!

You can't have a great bike without the right wheels! This can affect your en-TIRE decision. Okay, it is a bad joke, but hopefully this will stick in your mind when exploring your options. The size and width of the tires will make a big difference in your ride. Again, considering what you and your bike will be doing before picking out the tires.

Biking is such a fun activity and you can get a lot out of the sport if you follow these tips. Doing the research and the personal biking assessment will put you well on your way to biking utopia. Remember to be true to yourself and all will be smooth biking.
