The Types of Reels And Their Uses

By Sandy Meremt

Every fishing kit should contain at least one kind of fishing reel. Fishing reels can make fishing much easier by allowing the fisherman to reach greater depths, fish efficiently and catch larger fish. There isnt only one kind of fishing reel. On the contrary there are many types of reels that can be classified into three main categories of reels. These are casting reels, fly casting reels and bait casting reels.

In order to be able to use a bait casting reel one needs to know a few things about fishing and also have some experience in casting. Fishing with bait casting reels is a bit more complex than it is fishing with a spinning reel for example. The reason why bait casting reels are bit harder to use is that they let go of the line by using the weight of the lure. Bait casting reels have a mechanism that lays line across a rotating reel and that is how they let the line go.

The most important thing to keep in mind when using a fly fishing reel is to make sure that it has a drag that is very responsive. It is important you purchase a reel that can stand the tension and strain put on it by a large fish. Fly fishing reel are in general a bit more expensive than other kinds of reels. Something you will need to look out for on a fly fishing reel is plastic parts. Plastic breaks so you dont want to buy a reel that has plastic parts. Metal reels are much more dependable and they will last much longer.

The Spinning Reel is relatively inexpensive and it is a closed faced and fairly easy to control. The spinning reel is the most likely choice if you are a beginner in fishing. Most spinning reels have a push button release for casting as well as an opening at the top where the line comes out when you cast.

Every reel, including the spinning reel, will mount on your rod. Mounting a reel on an open faced spinning rod is a bit more challenging than you think. They come in many sizes to fit your needs. Based on their size they can be classified in regards to what kind of fishing you need to do. Lighter models are goof for pan fish whereas larger ones can be a great help when fishing in open waters. The line capacity on these is greater and is serviceable when you are after trout or even salmon.

Regardless of what kind of reel you choose, select one with a medium speed. If you are going to equip yourself with two reels then get a slow and a high speed one. Another thing you should keep in mind is the weight of the line itself. The lighter the line the smaller the reel you will need. As you can see there are a few types of reels.
