Fishing from Small Boats Can Get You Closer to the Water

By Mark Rogers

Fishing does not have to be done from a big expensive boat. Even though it seems that is what you see whenever you watch a movie, it is not necessarily the best way to fish. Fishing from small boats can be every bit as great an experience. And, sometimes, you will find you even get a better catch.

Ease in mobility is one of the greatest advantages with a smaller boat. You can find ones that can be put in the back of a truck or on top of an SUV. Lighter ones can be easily taken on and off, sometimes even by a single person. These smaller boats are nice as well because you will have access to more places. Boat trailers can sometimes inhibit the places you can just drive right into.

Once you get to your fishing water of choice, maneuverability is again a benefit. With a small boat, you can reach fishing spots that are too shallow or overgrown for a larger boat. These are some great areas where fish like to hide. You will probably find yourself catching fish on days where the fishermen with the bigger boats have nothing.

Price will be a factor for most people in purchasing a small boat rather than a large one. Purchase price is not the only lower cost, either. Maintaining a smaller boat is also less costly. For example, the amount of gasoline required will be far less with a small boat. Maintaining a larger boat can simply be more of a hassle as well.

Some people are less concerned about the price than the experience itself. A small boat just feels closer to the water and to the entire pastime. But, of course, it does all come at a lower price tag.

There are many different types of small boats available, made from various materials and at a range of prices. Common boat materials are wood, aluminum and fiberglass. And styles include flat bottoms, punts, dinghies, canoes and kayaks, just to name a few.

Some of the small boats available come with motors, for others you will have to purchase one separately if you want one. Other additions can be made as well, such as fish finders or other gadgets normally found on larger boats. If you have the room, they can be installed. Otherwise, there are portable versions available.

Do be careful as you are choosing what to add to your boat, including the motor. The boat should come with a recommendation as to how powerful a motor you can add. You want to be very careful not to exceed that power, nor to overload the boat in weight. Doing either can end up in serious boating accidents.

Spend a moment and look into fishing from small boats. You do not have to let finances keep you from enjoying one of your favorite hobbies. Fishing from your own boat and spending the day on your favorite water just may be more possible than you think.
