Accuracy International is a British Manufacture founded by the late two times Olympic Gold Medal winning smallbore rifle shooter Malcolm Cooper MBE. AI has lead the way in purpose designed military sniper and anti materiel rifles as these have displaced hunting and service rifle derivatives. Armies all the World over use the AI rifles and they are standard issue with the British, Australian, Swedish, Belgian, Dutch and German armies and the US Navy SEALs.
As great as they were, AI's own bolt action rifles, the AW and AWM, were prohibitively expensive for most civilian sports shooters to purchase. In response, AI took the Remington 700 and imbued it with much of the AW/AWM's ruggedness and weather resistance.
The Accuracy International Chassis System or AICS based on a solid aluminium chassis, machined from a single billet of aircraft grade aluminium. This contains a V shaped, self-aligning bedding system for the rifle onto which it is torqued down by two bolts supplied with the kit. Flat polymer panels are bolted to the chassis, giving the rifle its unique ergonomics. These resist all known rifle cleaning and lubricating chemicals. Accuracy International realized the importance the carriage of the rifle and came up with a unique harness sling which attaches to H&K style flush fitting attachment points on the chassis system. Mounting points are included for both AI and Harris bipods, the latter displacing the former on British L115 sniper rifles. The stock includes a thumbhole grip that is tolerant of different sized hands. The stock length is varied with bolt on spacers and the cheekpiece can be raised and lowered via screws to accommodate sights at various heights. Three different colors of panel facilitate use in temperate/jungle, desert/savannah or night/police environments.
Four variants are available. The Stage 1.5 is a fixed stock and the Stage 2.0 folds to the left - particularly useful for those riding in vehicles or fitting a sound moderator to their weapons. The Stages each have a long and short action version to suit the action lengths of the Remington 700. The short action can take the .308 Winchester family including the .243 and 7mm-08. The US Navy SEALs purchased the .300 Winchester Magnum Stage 2 AICS for their Mk 13 Mod 5 Sniper Weapon System.
The AICS takes reliable detachable magazines - a real boost to the 700s capability in certain scenarios. The AI 5 round .308 magazine is flush fitting and the AI 10 round .308 magazine protrudes from the chassis. The AI 5 round .300 Win. magazine differs in being single column. These magazines have become a de facto standard for Remington 700 detachable mag conversions and are used by Surgeon Rifles and Badger Ordnance among others.
The AICS is very easy to fit, requiring no gunsmithing whatsoever - just the services of a torque wrench. Only the receiver touches the chassis - the barrel is completely free floating. It's not as rigid a system as the permanent epoxy resin bonding used on the AW and AWM but it's very rigid and completely unaffected by temperature and humidity.
An AICS will add up to 5 lb. 11 oz. to your rifle - a non trivial consideration. No wonder AI put so much thought into the design of that harness-sling! Whilst you're not going to want to tote an AICS equipped 700 around the Rockies, at least you won't have to worry about the weather anymore. It's also not cheap. Prices as of Jan 2011 run from $857 to $1100. If you have the money and the inclination, you can do a lot worse.
