I wonder what the best seating arrangement is when out angling? I currently have, as I discovered when I took my fishing tackle down from the garage shelf the other day, a small collapsible stool which is rather old and I fear will struggle to hold me for very long. Partly down to metal fatigue but mostly to do with the reality that there is rather more to me than there was the last time I sat beside a river.

I'd always hankered after a huge fishing tackle box that doubles up as a seat just as by definition it is so useful. However, during poor weather I imagine they will tend to form pools which you really would not want to sit on without waterproof trousers. Also, for their height, they may make rather good footstools, so some sort of comfortable folding garden chair could be in order. And it would also be preferable to the previous two choices as it will have a back to it.

So, if the garden chair is the best selection, what type? Part of the needs for angling is that, once you get into a fish, it is necessary to be stood up, and if it's a pike or some other bigger species, it is likely to fight and could take some time to bring in, and so again, if it's raining then the cushion could easily get drenched and the risk of haemorrhoids becomes a factor. So perhaps a slatted seat could be the answer, though not plastic as that may be unwelcome in chilly conditions.

I have seen a type of camp beds for fishing, but I can't foresee any angling trip I go on is going to require anything like that, although a mini tent as an alternative to an umbrella could be a great addition to the fishing tackle, but in all of this is the factor that everything has to be carried to the peg which could conceivably be quite a way, and it would be best to be able to get it all there in one trip rather than a relay.

Bearing that in mind, we must now remember that we have a big fishing tackle box to double as a footstool over one shoulder, I have a rod case over the other shoulder which will also be carrying some kind of garden chair, a keep net and landing net in 1 hand which will only leave one hand free to carry something like a a flask, or bait if there isn't room in the box.

But as long as the day's angling is pleasant, it will all be worthwhile. And even if the fish are not necessarily feeding, if it's a warm day then a little lonely time with nothing to do other than philosophise on anything that comes to mind can be considered as a good day's fishing. It's very hard to do that with a cold, wet backside.
