Rethink about the five day rule

According to an unwritten deer hunting law, you should never stay or visit the same spot again which is called as a stand in hunting lingo for more than five days in a row. This is because the deer would eventually discover your location either by sight or scent. According to the North American Whitetail there are certain circumstances when breaking this rule can be beneficial provided you ensue to utilize proper techniques.

During the period of rut or poor vegetation growth deer often roam into the woods without a clear travel guide. Therefore during this time it is unlikely for the deer to discover your stand as they would on in search for food without performing proper examination of the surrounding. A place with abundant food supply can also be a good stand to watch out for deer. Therefore your strategy should be to find a stand location preferably on the edge of wood plots so you can make quick exit and entry.

Eliminate scents

Amateur deer hunters must not pay attention to apparently trivial details like the type of soap they use or whether or not their shoes are clean. These can usually have severe impact on your hunting activity. The deer hunting guide says that in order to ensure deer does not pick your scent you should use soaps and laundry detergent that are not unscented when washing you clothes and body. This even applies to bugs spray, sunscreen and other lotions and sprays. It is also necessary you clean your boots before each hunt as they might smell like the spoils from the previous hunt trip. In order to eliminate body odor you can try applying some baking soda under your armpits rather than using scented deodorants.

Hunting deer with decoys

Although most of the deer hunting happens in the woods behind heavy cover of trees and bushes, there are still some more advanced strategies which can be used when hunting in the open. As per the Nodak outdoors, you need to try setting up decoys or life sized model of doe usually in open field or meadow of the edge of wood plots.

Moreover, the location might also make it easy for the bucks to see the decoy which hopefully get obtained and linger over it, leaving you with an open and clear shot. However it is necessary that you ensure to set up the stand downwind from the wooded area and you need to stay hidden behind an obstruction like a tree or even a rocky outcrop if you need to get a perfect shot of the deer.
