Ocean Fun On Land And Water

By Byron Jonas

It is harder to not not enjoy being at the seaside than it is to find ocean fun. That is the reason that a vacation means the beach for more travelers than any other venue. Swimming, sunning, water sports, seafood, lighthouses and ferries, the boardwalk, and bringing home seashells are just some activities that everyone enjoys.

For some people, the best activity is to walk along the shore, seeing and hearing the waves, watching the birds, looking for shells and other flotsam that washes ashore, and seeing huge ships far out to sea. Walking along the edge of the sea can be enjoyed at any time of day and in all seasons. Stormy weather brings ashore more shells; calm days create the special serenity of being near the sea. In the off-season, it is easier to take your dogs along and harder to get a serious sunburn.

Even staying on the beach and never venturing a toe into the water is fun. Get a book (from a shop or from the library) and identify the shells on the beach, strange flotsam like egg cases and seaweeds, and the gulls and shore birds. Build a castle, read a book under a big umbrella, or sleep with the sound of the waves in your ears.

Of course, many love to swim in the ocean. The green waters of the northern Atlantic or the crystal clear water of the Caribbean have their own special charm. Tropical reefs are great for exploring, and the sand beaches of the Atlantic coast are wonderful for playing in the waves. Surf boards, body boards, or just body surfing are all ways of riding the waves, and swimming in the swells far beyond the breakers if a life experience.

Farther out will be those with speed boats, sea kayaks, jet skis, and sailboats or windsurfers. Deep sea fishing charters, whale and dolphin cruises, trips on the ferry boats to off shore islands, and visiting the local lighthouses are other ways to enjoy the water. Just watching the sun rise and set, as well as the moon, are ways to make memories for the whole family.

Boardwalk shops, amusements, and eating places, bikes and scooters to rent, miniature golf, souvenir shops, great seafood restaurants, dance pavilions, and arcades are all ways to pass the time at the beach. Find a pretty T-shirt or have one custom made, send post cards to all your friends, eat Turkish taffy and sea pebble candy, or get a corn dog. Walk out on the long piers and see what the fishermen are catching, or build a fire on beaches that allow them and roast hot dogs and marshmallows.

Ocean fun is a mixture of natural beauty and endless, restless water and the man made ways to enjoy yourself.
