How To Get Started With Flight School

By Morton Meintjes

Lots of people dream about getting their pilots license, and even though it can take time and effort, just about anyone can do it. All a person really needs to do is make a decision as to what type of flying they want to do. Both helicopter and airplane flight schools are available. The particular license obtained has much to do with determining the price, and flight school financing is readily available for most anyone with the interest and the desire.

It can be difficult to believe, but amazingly there are no educational requirements for being accepted. A degree or diploma is not required. Depending on the type of license being obtained, there are some medical tests that one must past, but that's it. If a person is medically cleared they can get the training they desire.

So the first thing to do is to find the right training location. It may be surprising, however there is no shortage of options. If more than one is available locally, take the time to stop by and tour the facilities and talk to the people there. It is a good idea to get a feel for the school before you get started.

Next, consider taking what many refer to as a discovery flight. Some schools offer these for free and others charge a small fee. Either way, it's a great way to get the feel for what it's like to take off, navigate, and land. Getting in the air early on will likely increase the resolve to do what it takes to become certified.

The next step is to choose an instructor. In some cases the school will do this, but in others there may be several instructors available. Finding the right fit is key. A prospective pilot should be very comfortable with his or her teacher, and it is acceptable to change instructors if necessary. This decision may also be determined in part by the type of place a person plans to learn how to fly.

While learning to fly is not a terribly expensive thing to do, money should be a consideration. Students will be paying for their ground school material, but they will also be funding their instructor's time as well as the aircraft rental along with the fuel required to fly it. Financing is almost always available, however many people choose to pay as they go. Either way it is wise to develop a training budget.

Certainly there are many things to consider when it comes to flight school, from how to finance it to what to fly. Choosing the right school and instructor can be the difference between success and failure. Take the time to explore all the available options and then get started. Whether for business or for pleasure, nothing matches the enjoyment of flying, and anyone who is willing can learn.
