Learn How to Catch a Catfish Using Noodling

By John Garrett

The catfish species has a wide variety of subspecies. They dwell in freshwater bodies and can be spotted in any part of the world except in the Antarctic. Small percentage of catfish also live in saltwater bodies. Catfishes are normally small, weighing usually between ten to fifteen pounds. Some catfish species, though, can grow to sizes that can give anglers a really hard time.

How to know if it's a catfish

When you see a fish, would you know if it's a catfish or not? Catfishes are named after its barbells, which resemble the cat's whiskers. Barbells are elongated organs that are close to the mouth. But, these may also be found on the chin or as nostril extension. Just like a cat's whiskers, catfish barbells respond to certain stimuli. It shows vigilance as well, increasing a catfishes' sensitivity when danger is lurking. Taste buds can also be found in their barbells.

One more distinctive feature of the catfish is the concave leading rays on its pectoral and dorsal fins. Its leading ray proves to be so physically powerful that it can give out an intoxicating protein when faced with threat. These protein excretions can harm humans through its sting and often, an individual is stung by an intoxicating leading ray will require immediate medical treatment.

However, not all species of catfish is capable of giving out protein attacks. The electric catfish is incapable to do protein attacks because of the absence of the hollow ray. As an alternative, when faced with a threat, it gives out electric charges of 350 volts as protection.

A common method of catching a catfish is by using your bare hands, this is known as Noodling. A popular practice among Native Americans, noodling was a popular fishing technique during the Depression and later on, became a sport.

Noodling is the most common technique that people use to catch a catfish. In order to catch the fish, the person must use their bare hands. This technique is a well-known practice among Native Americans during the time of the Great Depression. Later on, this particular fishing technique developed into a sport.

As soon as a hiding spot is found, a stick is then inserted into the hole. This is done to confirm the presence of a catfish inside it and not mistake it for a turtle or snake. Slip you hand in the hole as bait. The catfish attacks and bites the hand to get rid of threat. When it bites and latches into the hand, the noodler then pulls it out above the surface.

Once the hiding spot of the fishes are found, it is necessary to insert a stick into the hole. After confirmation that there is indeed fish inside, put one hand into a hole - but be wary of catfish bites. Catfishes bite to ward off danger, so it's important to use the noodler to pull it out.

Spotters will then attempt to get the catfish off the noodler's hand. It is their job to aid the noodler, especially when the catfish is too heavy or large for the noodler. In some cases, a large catfish would even have enough strength to drag a person into the water, making the sport fearfully thrilling.
