The Specialized StumpJumper - Brand New For 2011

By Darren Fergusen

Alot of people do not know this but the firsr mountain bike was made in Japan by Mike Sinyard's Specialized Bicycle Elements (USA). The initial a single rolled from the production line in 1981 and was aptly named the Stumpjumer that is nonetheless in production right now Three decades on!

The specialized Stumpjumper was based on a custom constructed design and style initially marketed by Tom Ritchey, Gary Fisher and Charles Kelly. Mike took this idea and marketed the Specialized version as being a mass product with a custom constructed look. The first Stumpy's were hand welded steel frames, it were built with a modified BMX stem and handlebars, came equipped using a 15 speed Suntour ARX GT gear process which had been made for road bikes as well as stole cantilever brakes and chainset that were designed for touring bikes all-in-all a bit of a Frankenbike (as of late called a custom!)

The main difference to todays re-incarnation is the fact that it came without suspension and weighed in at 14 kilo's - doesn't sound like you'd compete on it but Christopher sauser and Ned Overend certainly did!

The 1981 version sold for a fairly reasonable $750 for a complete bike and 395 for the frame considering today's versions start at more than double this amount and was marketed as and affordable bike "for all reasons". As you'd expect with any new product retailers were sceptical of the new sport of mountain biking and branded it a big kid's BMX but they would soon change their tune when the first shipment of 125 bikes sold out in 6 days and was a resounding success and contributed heavily to an increased interest in the sport.

The initial Specialized Stumpjumper can still be observed inside the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. and should you were in the industry for a mtb with background back in 2007 Specialized created a restricted edition replica from the original with modern elements named the Stumpjumper Classic and sold within the USA for $1300 - that's inflation for you!
