Using Catfishing Baits Properly

By John Garrett

The average person sees fishing as just a hobby and often fail to realize the importance of using catfishing baits properly. Incorrect use catfish bait can cause amateur fishermen to waste quite a bit of valuable time without landing a single catfish. It is important to know the basic principles behind using catfishing baits properly, particularly when doing so from the bank of a river or aboard a boat.

The following are five essential tips you need to familiarize yourself with to successfully use your baits.

It all starts with timing
It is crucial to know and understand the best time of the day for catfishing. Technically, you can go catfishing at anytime of the day but for maximum reward for your effort I would recommend fishing early in the morning or late in the evening. Just like most animals, these species come out in the morning to hunt for food. They usually stay near the bottom of the river or lake in the day and come out again for food in evenings and night.

Consider weather conditions
Rainy and overcast days are often the best times to go catfishing. Such weather conditions resemble early morning situations when fishes swim up in search of food. The gloomy clouds also give the impression that it is early morning throughout the day, therefore making it ideal for you to fish any time of the day. Apart from the weather, you can also try fishing during autumn or spring. During these seasons, fishes become more active and tides are high.

Keep the bait still.
This may sound obvious but you will be surprised how many beginners make this mistake. It is crucial that you keep your bait as stationary and still as possible. This will improve your chances of attracting catfishes into your bait. Ideally, you don't want the bait moving or bouncing. Be observant of the water current or something that sticks out of the water. To find out if there are fishes in the area, throw a fresh sad head. If you do not get a bite in the next thirty minutes, go find a new spot.

Looking for the sweet spots is crucial to successfully catching catfish. Having the best bait and technique in the world won't do any good if the spots simply don't have any fish. Catfish are naturally elusive but overhang over a bend in a river or creek is a common place for these fish to lurk, as it offers them some degree of safety. Experienced fishermen often pay attention to details such as which parts of a river or location are more likely to be alcoves for certain species.

Hooking it right
The size of the hook can make a difference when it comes to catfishing. Don't hesitate to try different kinds, and expect to make mistakes along the way. Oversized hooks are not ideal to use since catfishes won't be able to take the whole thing inside their mouths. Just keep trying different sizes until you get the right hook. The important thing is to gradually apply these useful tips on using catfishing baits so you can get a healthy catch on your next fishing adventure.
