The Vital Role Of Bike Helmets For Motorcyclists

By Cedric James

A "form of protective clothing worn on the head and usually made of metal or some other hard substance, typically for protection falling objects or high speed collisions" is a definition provided by wordiQ.com to the word helmet. Helmets are gears that provide users safety against inevitable circumstances like crashes or impacts as they help prevent or minimize head injury during those unfortunate incidents. Motorcycle and bike helmets are among the more popular types of helmets but these gears are also used in military, construction, mining, and sports.

So how does a helmet protect the head during collisions? For helmets designed to resists against greater impacts, a layer of crushable foam is contained in the gear. This crushable foam crushes during a collision or when the head hits a hard surface. With the foam crushed, the crash energy is controlled and the head's stopping time is extended, which in turn reduces the peak impact to the brain. As such, the thicker the foam, the better. However, there also are helmets designed for lesser impacts. Examples of these are construction helmets that do not include crushable foams. Rather, these helmets are designed with hard shells to protect the head from falling objects.

Helmets are used for various purposes. Generally, there are five types of helmets-combat helmets, two-wheeler helmets, sports helmets, occupational helmets, and emergency and protective troop helmets. Combat helmets are the earliest form of helmets used in warfare not only by the Romans and Greeks but also by the military forces during the ancient, medieval, up to today's modern times. They are used for military purposes that range from head protection to gas masking. Bike helmets, on the other hand, are examples of two-wheeler helmets which are gears worn by cyclists and motorcycle riders while sports helmets, as the name suggests, are helmets used in various sports events like football, cricket, and baseball. Occupational helmets are used in construction sites and examples of these are hard hats, miners' helmets and welders' helmets while emergency and protective troop helmets are head gears worn by people who serve in emergency situations like policemen, firefighters, lifeguards, etc.

Hence, the design of helmets also differs as these gears are used for various purposes. Bike helmets for example are designed with features that protect against blunt impact forces from the wearers' head striking the road. Sports helmets, like batting helmets, on the other hand, have an expanded protection over the ear, which protects the jaw from injury. Also, motorcycle helmets often have flip-down face screen for rain and wind protection, as well as projecting visors to protect the eyes from the sun's glare.

So how does one purchase the right helmet? This decision is always dependent on where the helmet is to be used. Nevertheless, in purchasing one, say for example in the purchase of a motorcycle or bike helmet, you must always locate the sticker from the Consumer Product Safety Commission or Quality Assurance of your country. This will guarantee that the helmet you will be purchasing has been tested and has been approved as safe for use.

Helmets are indeed an important gear we must learn more of especially with the number of activities they may used for. Nevertheless, whether your gears are bike helmets, motorcycle helmets, or if you will be using these for other purposes, it is important that you have the best helmet that would protect your head and brain from incurring any injury during inevitable accidents.
