Basic Gun Safety For Everyone

By Jim Wayons

If you are a gun owner, then you are probably more than aware of the fact that a gun is a dangerous weapon. However, while guns are inanimate objects, the fact is that they are still deadly, especially if they are in the hands of someone who does not have the basic concepts of gun safety entirely grasped. This is why basic gun safety is something that can never be stressed quite enough. Here are some of those safety tips.

The first thing you need to keep in mind is that these are basic gun safety rules. You will be reading some things that you have probably heard all of your life about gun safety, but that does not make them any less true and you may even gain a new perspective on some of them.

If you own a gun, then there is no doubt that you have heard the expression that the most dangerous gun is the unloaded gun. To further explain this expression, think about the fact that the majority of gun accidents that occur in the world are the result of assuming that the gun the person was handling was not loaded. This is a mistake that has led to a ridiculous number of injuries and deaths. You should not ever assume a gun is unloaded until you have had the opportunity to inspect it and disarm the weapon yourself.

Another rule that everyone should keep in mind is to never store your weapon while it is loaded. This rule is very commonly broken due primarily to forgetfulness. But there are still plenty of accidents that occur every year as a result of people assuming that the gun in their drawer or the gun in their cabinet has no ammunition in it. It is an extension of the previously mentioned rule of not assuming that a gun is unloaded until you check. The best way to avoid this problem is to store your ammunition in a separate spot as your gun and to check your gun after each use to make sure that you have disarmed it.

Another thing to do to ensure your safety when handling your gun is to always keep the finger off of the trigger, even if the gun is not loaded. It is very easy to mistake the gun for being empty when there is in fact one in the chamber, so keep your finger off of the trigger unless you intend to fire the weapon. This rule is especially true if you are around people, either at a gun range or if you are hunting.

So you see that while these are elementary gun safety practices, the high number of injuries and deaths that result from ignoring them show that they cannot be taught enough. You must always keep these guidelines in mind when handling your weapon and you must always remember that going the extra mile with safety is worth it, and could very well save not only your life, but the life of someone else. So remember, safety first, safety second, and safety last.
