The health benefits of cycling

By Sandra Telman

Society today imposes an ever-increasing amount of pressure on us to stay fit, healthy, and looking good. TV, magazines and advertising constantly notify us of the best diets, the best looks and the newest exercise craze. The ideal way to stay fit however is to ensure continuous and manageable exercise that can easily be adopted into your daily routine.

Staying healthy is about both our physical and psychological state. Cycling can offer positive impacts on both, which is proven to assist in keeping your life going for longer. We all need a certain amount of exercise, and cycling can be the best way to ensure we get our fitness fix.

The key to our health is our immune system; with a good immune system we can fight off the viruses, infections and diseases that should be avoided in order to lead a healthy life. Moderate activity will strengthen our immune system, increasing activity against battles such as with tumour cells.

Most muscles within our body are engaged whilst cycling, from our legs pushing the pedals around, to our core muscles stabilising and keeping ourselves balanced. Engaging our muscles will increase suppleness and strength, allowing them to function efficiently as needed.

Keeping our hearts healthy is also of utmost importance, any cardiovascular work will assist in doing this, getting our hearts pumping the blood around our bodies, doing the job it should do. This form of exercise is also going to aid calorie burning, which in turn will help in weight loss. In a society where obesity is ever growing, cycling and other cardio work where calories and fat are burnt are important to sustain a healthy lifestyle.

Another factor influencing health is our mental state. Our minds are powerful and a positive one can also affect our mortality. Cycling can help diminish stress and abnormal sleeping patterns. It can help to keep a positive frame of mind, keeping those hormones balanced.

Some may say there are negative effects of cycling, from the risk of head injuries, to the increased intake and exposure to pollution, however the positive effects on one's health, and the decrease in carbon emissions of people using cycling as an alternative means of transport to work, surely outweighs the negatives.
