things to consider when buying a bike

By Huerelho Lopez

When it comes to purchasing a new bike, you can be faced with a whole host of decisions to make. Making sure that you choose the right back can be a lot more difficult than you might think, at first. There are bikes for all purposes and all price ranges; from the cheap, basic machine to a professional design, which could cost you well into the thousands of pounds. Before you make a decision on what type of bike you'd like, there are a few things to consider.

Firstly, what is the primary purpose of your bike? Will you be commuting to and from work, will you be hitting the mountain trails or will you be taking leisurely journeys at weekends? There are specific bicycles designed for pretty much every use. For a daily commute, you might want to consider a road bike whereas for the mountain trails, a mountain bike would obviously be more appropriate.

Mountain bikes can be split into several categories, again depending on how you plan to use you bike. As a general rule, mountain bikes are built for the purpose of tackling harsh terrains. However, some bikes are specifically made for downhill racing, whereas others are better suited for flat terrain. If you choose the wrong type of bike for your style of riding, you could find cycling more difficult than it could be as there is a better-suited type of bicycle out there.

Cross-country bikes are designed to tackle most off-road terrains and usually come as hardtail, which means there is no rear suspension as with some other types of mountain bike. A popular option is to have 29inch wheels rather than the standard 26inch. The reason for their poularity is quite simple; the large wheel allows the rider to ride over obstacles with greater ease and allows an altogether smoother ride.

Most mountain bikes use a sturdy, lightweight frame that is capable of dealing with any terrain you throw at it. However, it really is worth shopping around for the best deals. There are some cheaper bikes out there that just won't be up to the task of hardcore off roading, so make sure you check the specifications in great detail.
