Tips to Help You Plan a Stress Free Vacation This Summer

By Damian Papworth

Some people get stressed out when it comes to planning their summer vacation. There's really no need to, however, and it kind of defeats the purpose. After all, you're going away from home to get away from the annoying things like work and bills. Below, you'll find some tips to help you enjoy a holiday without the usual hang-ups.

Stay True to Your Budget: When you start planning your trip, take all of your costs into account, such as transportation, lodging, and activities. Don't stretch this number too far, and remember that you will likely have some extras pop out of nowhere. One of the fastest ways to ruin a great trip is by over-extending your budget to the point where you are constantly pinching pennies while you're away. You don't want to have to limit yourself in terms of dining or activities because you spent too much on a plane ticket or hotel.

Think About a "Staycation": This kind of vacation became very popular in the U.S. in the summer of 2008 when prices at the gas pump soared, but they're applicable across the world, and especially right in your backyard. The premise is simple: rather paying tons of cash for a hotel and airfare, stay at home. Take a week off from your job and explore attractions in your area. You'll have more money, and likely a lot less hassle. There's no need to think you have to take off for an exotic island only because you're taking off from work.

Prepare to Go Away Before You Leave: The operative word here is before. Many people don't think about things like home security before they take off, only to have to stress and worry about it while they're on vacation. Contact a neighbor to take in your mail, and consider having an alarm system installed. If you already have an alarm, have your partner double check whether you've armed it. That way, you'll avoid second-guessing yourself after it's already too late.

Leave the Children at Home: Don't feel like you're obligated to take your children with you on your special summer vacation. Gently explain to them that you're going away for a little while to recharge your batteries, and remind them that they're perfectly safe with whatever trusted relative or friend you're leaving them with.

You Don't Need to Do it All: There's no need to jam-pack your itinerary full of museums, galleries, exhibits, and theater. Don't forget that you're going away to leave stress behind, rather than create new stresses. If you have a complete schedule that needs to be maintained throughout the trip, you're asking for trouble. Take a good book, lay in bed or on the beach, and enjoy yourself.

Taking a summer vacation is the best way to distress after a long year of work. Pay attention to these simple tips and you'll do just fine as you plan your trip.
