What Are Some Common Trolling Motor Problems

By Trey Hodges

The trolling motor is usually an electrically powered drive that is useful for fishermen who wants to be quietly mobile when he is in the midst of catching fish. Like most electro-mechanical devices they will encounter problems when in use. Let us talk about some of the common trolling motor problems.

Trolling motors are one form of an auxiliary drive for a fishing boat. Being small in size they tend to be less powerful than the main outboard engine. A common situation faced by owners is that their boat is too big for the drive. This problem becomes very clear when he wishes to go against the current. He will find out that his progress is very slow or there is none at all. If this problem becomes irritating already the owner should think about finding a smaller boat or getting a bigger drive.

Using mismatched motors usually overworks the electrical drive of the system. You may find out the suddenly it does not work anymore. One of the first things to check are the fuses that may have blown. That is why it it is always a good idea to have spare fuses with you all the time.

Another problem that is related to the lack of power of the drive is that once the propeller is entangled in grass and weeds, the unit might not be strong enough to break free. Fortunately most trolling motors are light and can be easily lifted out from the water to clean the propeller blades.

Since fishing requires the full use of the hands it may be hard to operate the auxiliary drive when it is time to move to a more strategic spot. There are pedal controls that could be connected to the trolling motor. With the use of his feet, the owner has full control of his craft.

Because the drive is powered by batteries, the unit obviously requires an adequately sized battery. So to go on a long trip you need to have a bigger battery. If this is not possible then you must bring multiple batteries. These are heavy and quite difficult to transport. The irony is that you now own a light drive but the power source is heavy. When it is time to go home, you need to take the batteries out from the boat and into your car. Then you have to bring them to a service station to get them charged.

A trolling motor is a big convenience for those fishers who want to make the most of their fishing trips. Similar to most mechanical objects they will be subjected to common trolling motor problems while being used. Most of these problems can be solved by using common sense and reading the user's manual.
