Buying The Right Kayaks For Beginners

By Carl Hartley

There are many kayaks for beginners and finding the right one requires either knowledge or research. If you're ready to delve into kayaking you may consider trying out some of the versions that are available for rental. You will get a good idea about what your preferences are this way.

Kayaking in ocean water can require different equipment than kayaking in lake water. There are certain shells that can be used almost anywhere. Many of the rugged inflatable versions are good for different bodies of water with the exception of white water. Used kayaks for sale often have a history. Asking the current owner or seller about the types of water it performs well on can help you learn about what you need.

If you're planning on kayaking in ocean waters you should know that there are two options. The "sit on" version provides a steady platform but doesn't keep you inside the shell. The "sit in" ocean kayaking equipment will give you a deeper base. Beginners will need to have the "sit on" version. This is because the ocean breakers can be dangerous when you're sitting inside a shell. If you capsize you want to be able to slip right off rather than being trapped inside while ocean waves crash on top of you.

You can also find white water shells that are designed to be quick and nimble under some of the most impressive conditions. This isn't necessarily recommended for a beginner. Tandem kayaking is great for two people if you have a tandem shell. If you plan on going solo the weight of the vessel is rather important. A fast response can be necessary. Smaller, lighter versions are typically faster to respond than the longer, heavier versions.

Second hand kayaks are great for the early learning stages. If you really enjoy the sport you're going to do it often. It's quite possible that you will outgrow a beginner's model rather quickly.

Buying a second hand model allows you to get into the sport without breaking the bank. The kayaking equipment that is listed for sale will often be in excellent condition. Time constraints can keep people from getting out on the water. Those who lack the time will often sell their equipment.

You can also find kayaking equipment suitable for beginners through eco-touring facilities and schools that teach kayaking. Often the shells that you can buy from them are in great shape. Replacement kayaks are purchased in order to keep a fleet as light and fast as possible.

The right kayaks for beginners will be well suited to the age and strength of the individual. Of course, they will be within a reasonable price range and be free from significant damage. If you simply have no idea what you want arrange to take a lesson or two at a school and spend some time in different types until you get a feel for what you like and what you can handle. This is an inexpensive way to try it out and avoid making a purchasing mistake. Once you have the right model you'll find you'll be spending lots of time in it. Taking your time to choose carefully is definitely recommended.
