If you are interested in duck hunting, there are many areas in which to find other waterfowl enthusiasts in east Texas. While deer hunting requires hours of time alone in a tree or hutch, duck hunting can be a social event with two or three other hunters, and if you're a novice, getting experience with a buddy who knows the ropes or a guide who will teach as you go could end-up with a great new hobby.
Duck hunting season starts in the fall and is over the beginning of winter. You will need warm clothing to enjoy your hunting experience and brown camouflage clothing including pants, hat and shirt will be your best choice because you will be in wetland areas which are usually brown at this time of year. Do not forget to get waders to keep yourself dry and warm. You will probably be doing a lot of walking through swampy areas and waders are perfect for this and chest waders are even better and can also be used for fishing.
It is a good idea to have approximately 10 decoys and robo-duck is a decoy that is battery operated to move like a real duck and is known to be good at attracting ducks. Decoys are not entirely necessary once you are familiar with where ducks congregate for feeding so scout the area you will be hunting in before the day of the hunt.
Obviously you will need your choice of firearm. Many hunters' standard choice is a 12-gauge shotgun, but if you are patient and remain at a reasonable range (35 yards or less) when shooting, any high-powered shotgun would work well. Always wear a facemask to keep camouflaged when you need to look into the sky.
Plan to check out different areas so you are not in the same spot all the time and do not shoot into the sky trying to hit ducks that are out of range. You could spoil the hunt for that day, waste ammunition and injure ducks for no good reason.
