Fall Missouri Waterfowl Hunting Opportunities

Missouri waterfowl hunting is a popular fall activity and the state has a rich and diverse population. With a prime location along the Mississippi Flyway, the area is an ideal location for sportsman to visit in hopes of bagging ducks and geese. The fees are low and the limits are high.

The season begins in early fall. The opening date for teal species is September 10th and geese season opens at the beginning of October. The season for ducks, excepting teal, starts October 29th in the Northern part of the state and November 24th for the Southern third.

The entire state has a tremendous variety of species to entice hunters including Canada Geese, White-Fronted Geese, Snow Geese, Brant, Mallard, Shoveler, Pintail, Widgeon and Teal.

The Midwest has recently developed into a leading area for snow goose harvests. Snow geese have become abundant migrants and congregate in wetlands in the Northwest, North Central and Southeastern areas.

Some of the most popular areas are the rice-rich fields of the Bootheel in the Southeast, the Golden Triangle area in the North Central region and public lands in the Northwest area near the Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska borders.

Popular locations include Grand Pass Conservation Area, Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area, Duck Creek Conservation Area, Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge and Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge. These natural areas are known for having large congregations of birds, boasting of tens of thousands of geese and ducks at a time during peak migration.

Hunters traveling a great distance are advised to consult and hire a local hunting guide to maximize their opportunities for a successful trip.
