Florida Shipwrecks A Sunken Treasure

By Antoinette Oliver

Look along the Florida coast and much like the last 400 years you will see cargo ships carrying merchandise across the great sea. In years pas, t these ships often carried treasures of gold, silver and many other valuables that were being moved from the Aztec to Europe and America as well. Ships were often caught in storms, or caught on a reef and became Florida shipwrecks hidden under the sea.

Wreckers were men who would go out from Key West and try to recover items from ships as they were sinking into the water. They would save people who were passengers and or crew on board as well as the cargo the ship carried. They would then take the cargo back to land and they would resell it at auction many times back to the crew from the ships.

In August of 1856 one of the most well known vessels, and the salvage that brought in the most money, came from the Isaac Allerton. It was carrying a large amount of marble heading to New Orleans for the new Customs building as well as many other things.

This ship was caught in a hurricane and wrecked in the Keys hitting a reef. Over 50,000 dollars worth of merchandise was recovered. Much of the marble was too large to be recovered and is still in the ship today still unattainable do to the weight and depth.

There are several wrecks across the state that can be viewed by a trip undersea as a diver. These wrecks include USS Massachusetts-BB-2, Half Moon, SS Tarpon, USCG Cutter Duane. Also you can see the City Of Hawkinsville, USS Alligator, the Maple Leaf site, San Pedro Lofthus and Bird Key wreck.

All of these jewels can be viewed either by visiting one of the museum sites. You can also go for a dip and dive down to see them. Both are a short day trip to the locations and offer things for everyone and span across this great state. Read more about: florida shipwrecks
