Getting Started in Point to Point Horse Racing

By Ruth Williams

Racing from point to point is the amateur equivalent of steeple chasing, which was historically performed with horses that had been specifically bred for and trained in hunting. This sport began when hunters would seek diversion from the hunt by racing their hunting steeds across the English countryside, usually from one landmark, such as a church steeple, to another.

- Rather than an organic landscape, racetracks will be mapped precisely and will include man-made obstacles. The race course will typically be five kilometers long, but there may be both longer and shorter courses used for various categories of horses, with fencing and obstacles constructed from birch, which stand roughly 1.5 meters tall.

You can either get started in point to point racing with a horse that you own yourself or you can join a partnership where more than one person is responsible for a horse. Although formal registration for point to point racers doesn't exist, to qualify for these races you have to be over 16 years of age and be a member in some way of the organisation that issued your horse its Hunter Certificate.

If you are racing your horse in a point to point event with a group of other people, you need to appoint one person to be the leader of ownership. When naming your group, keep in mind that you must end your group's official name with one of the following words: family, partnership, group, friends, or partners.

Now, in order to continue your foray into this type of racing, you will need to select your horse's colors. With the sport being amateur, registering the colors isn't necessary. This means that you can use as wonderful or weird a colour combination as you can dream up for your team. You can add your favorite picture, comic book hero or anything else that you like. When putting information on the Entry Application for the race, be sure to clearly describe your colours so there will be no confusion.

When entering a horse race, remember there is a deadline to submit all entries. Be sure to fill out and submit your Entry Form before the closing time if you wish to compete. Although entries cannot be currently submitted online, some races allow them to be submitted via phone.
