In 1980, the Austrian military decided to update their current firearm model and enlist an entirely new design. They opened this task up to anyone who could provide an outstanding firearm design.
To be sure, there were strict requirements. This new handgun had to be a semi-automatic, it needed to be easy to clean and maintain, it had be easy to take apart, it had to be safe and have interchangeable features. The list was much longer, however, this gives you some idea of the rigid requirements they demanded from the creator.
A few years after the Austrian military issued this application process, an engineer by the name of Gaston Glock created a working prototype just 3 months after he began working on it. His product design and prototype were so successful, that the military brought the handgun into their firearm ranks soon after.
