Going Fishing In The UK

By Mark Walters

The United Kingdom is renowned the world over for its areas of outstanding natural beauty, and one of the best ways you can experience the great outdoors is by going on a fishing trip to spend a few days soaking up the amazing scenery and fresh air and effectively getting away from the hustle and bustle of inner cities. Below we have compiled a list of some of the best places you can enjoy good fishing, great scenery, and a relaxing experience, in the U.K.

If it is beach fishing you are after, Cornwall in the south east of England has some great spots. Places like the Bude Breakwater, Perranporth, Holywell bay and Crantock all have some fantastic coastlines and are great spots to catch fish such as flatfish, mackerel, dogfish and skate. In Wales, some great areas for shore fishing include Barmouth, Borth-y-Guest, Fairbourne and Criccieth. Some of the best locations in these areas can be difficult to spot, so have a search on the internet for directions.

One of the most difficult types of angling is river fly fishing. The reason it is considered so difficult is because while there is an element of luck, as in any type of fishing, it also relies on the combination on good technique, the perfect fly and the best possible location in order to succeed. The Lake District is known for its fantastic scenery, and one of the best places to go fly fishing in England is in the River Eden. Further up north in Scotland, the river Tweed is famed for its great fishing, though most prefer its tributaries the Ettrick, Whiteadder, Yarrow and Teviot.

Stillwater or lake fishing is probably the most popular form of angling in the United Kingdom, and as such, there are a huge number of great places you can go to enjoy yourself. In this light, finding somewhere good to go stillwater fishing is not as difficult as other types of fishing and depends mainly on what area of the U.K. you want to visit. England, Wales, Scotland and even Northern Ireland have some superb marks, so once you have an idea of what area you want to visit, do a more localised search on the internet to find a promising location.

Due to the popularity of the sport in the U.K., great fishing can be found anywhere and everywhere. Being an island, Great Britain has some fantastic areas for rock or beach fishing, and with locations such as the Lake District, Snowdonia national park and the Loch Lomand and the Trossachs national park, you will never be short of ideas for where to take your next stillwater fishing trip in the United Kingdom!
