Since the foundation of the United States of America her citizens have been assured of their right to own and use firearms because it was one of many rights that most Americans believe is guaranteed to them by the Second Amendment of The Constitution. Although many Americans don't really care if they own guns or not, there are many others that would willingly die to preserve that right. In places where the gun ownership right has been put into question, thousands always step up to fight against losing it. Anyone who wants to stop most Americans from owning firearms are always going to be in for a very big battle.
Some lawmakers seem to interpret the Second Amendment a little differently than the average American citizen. Many lawmakers say that the amendment is referring to military groups like the National Guard when it is speaking of the people and gun rights, but you won't convince determined gun owners of this. Since the Second Amendment clearly states the right of the people to keep and bear arms, most people believe that it should be interpreted exactly as it is written. Many Americans that firmly believe in their constitutional right to have firearms also worry that if this right is taken from them that other liberties that are guaranteed in the Constitution could also be put into jeopardy.
When you take into consideration the facts about the crime rate in the United States compared with other countries, you can understand why so many Americans feel they are safer when they can own their own guns. Almost any criminal that wants a gun can get one and they do not obtain them legally for the most part. Average citizens believe that since they have to live in fear of being a victim of any number of violent crimes, they stand a better chance of evening the odds if they too have a gun. Many Americans have been able to save their own lives when put into a perilous life threatening situation because they were prepared to defend themselves and their family with a weapon of their own.
When you look at the other side of the coin, the lawmakers and citizens that support gun control believe that the fewer guns there are available and sold, the safer it is for everyone over all. A lot of people would go along with this thought if they could be assured that criminals could be prevented from obtaining their guns illegally as well. Most people are not confident in the least that much of anything can be done to prevent violent criminals from obtaining firearms when they really want to get one, so that's why they are adamant about not giving up their guns.
The gun ownership debate has been going on for quite some time now and no there is no end in sight. It is not likely that either side is going to throw in the towel. No matter which side of the argument you fall into, some thought really should be given to having a Constitutional right reinterpreted and taken away. It very well could set a trend towards other rights being questioned and reinterpreted as well and that could be the beginning of the unraveling of the United States Constitution according to those people that the Constitution should never be redefined in any way.
