The morning is foggy and quite crisp. You've been out here in the scrub for the last three hours, well before dawn. You live by the mantra that the "early bird gets the worm." Well, today the early hunter is going to get the buck and by the look of the scrapes you've seen, it's going to be a big one. You give a grunt through your deer call, and settle down into the foliage around you with your rifle at the ready. Your breathing stills as you see the big buck move into the clearing, its dark eyes looking for a challenger. You wipe the dampness off your hands onto one of your hunting t-shirts, and line up your shot.
This is what it's all about, guys. The thrill of the hunt. There are so many different feelings sewn up into one experience that that act of hunting is a unique and powerful experience for anyone who has every tried it. You are brought back to the deepest roots of mankind by stalking your own prey and bringing it down. You can taste the essence of what it was like to be one of those people from the past who lived and died based on their skill at taking down their intended target. You may go home, throw your hunting t-shirts in the wash, and plop down in front of a television but for that brief moment, you can feel that deep desire for a kill.
Hunters do not revel in death and the destruction of life. They do not want to rip nature to shreds with tooth and nail with bloody abandon. Hunters revere the life of the wild animals. There are strict laws in place that prohibit unfair hunting practices, over-hunting, and abuse. There are some people out there who have cursed at me at the grocery store after seeing me in one of my hunting t-shirts. They scold me for taking the life of an innocent animal in a barbarous act. Do you know what was in their shopping cart? Chicken breasts and bacon that was most likely killed in terrible, inhumane ways.
There is sacrifice to the act of hunting that many don't understand either. You cannot simply put on hunting t-shirts, walk into the middle of a field, and shoot the first deer that you see. That simply does not work. Deer are skittish creatures because they are prey animals. They have learned to fear man many centuries ago and will shy away from their scent and their presence. To truly hunt, you have to be up hours before the sun rises and place yourself in concealment before the deer awaken and begin moving about the wood. You have to sit in discomfort, cold, and misery for many hours just for one brief moment of excitement and satisfaction.
There is nothing that really compares to the satisfaction I feel when I bring home my own meat. I am not partial to bringing home trophies, but I am very much excited when I'm able to bring home a carcass to share with friends and family. Venison is delicious and I have enough of it to eat on it all year long. When prepared correctly, it can be some of the most delicious and savory meat you can try. I like to prepare mine by smoking the shoulders for some BBQ of a different taste and texture than pork. I may wear an apron when I'm cooking, but I wear my hunting t-shirts underneath. In fact, I'd like to challenge you to finding me not wearing one of my hunting t-shirts. I'm just a little proud of what I do.
