While Australia is a popular vacation destination, most visitors simply stick to the large cities when exploring. This is a real shame, as there is plenty to see among the undeveloped areas of the nation. 4WDing the Australian outback is a great way to discover the natural beauty of some more remote parts of the country.

A good place to start is the Simpson Desert. Located among the northeastern region of SA, this area famously foiled intrepid explorers Burke and Wills. The read backdrop is simply enchanting, while perhaps the main highlight here has to be the vast Simpson Desert Conservation Park SA.

Cape York on the east coast is another great place to explore with a 4WD vehicle. Special tracks lead along the stunning Gulf of Carpentaria, which is best experienced at sunset. This region is inhabited by a large number of kookaburras, and their distinctive cry echoes for miles around.

Experienced drivers can follow the road all the way along Gunbarrel Highway to the desolate Canning Stock. This was the region where the first cattlemen tried to make their living. The main feature here is the enchanting deep red outback rock, while the purple haze of the distant mountains makes a charming contrast.

Nature lovers will want to pay a visit to the Kimberley region. The inviting rock pools and waterfalls that can be found hidden among the desert rock are great places to cool down for a while. Visitors will want to make sure they take along a camera, as the natural features here are simply stunning.

Of course, this is just a sample of what is on offer. Some other Australian outback highlights include the Bungle Bungle Ranges and the Mitchell Plateau. Despite its desolate nature, a wide range of wildlife can be spotted by people who have a keen eye.

It is all too easy to get lost here, and it is best to travel as part of a group. Special 4WD tours are available, which take visitors to some of the most enchanting places in the country. Joining a tour is also a good way to make friends.

However, it is also possible to complete the journey independently if you prefer. Drivers will want to make sure that they choose their vehicle carefully and inspect it closely before making tracks. It is also essential to take along plenty of provisions such as water, food and a map. Also try to find a way to keep in contact in case of emergency.
