By Lawrence U. Firestone

As early as 1990 the descendant of Bronco II, Ford Explorer, has been in the assembly line and in 1991 it was ready to be offered in the auto market. The models that were fabricated during the year range 1991 toward 2010 were smaller as compared to today's model of Ford Explorer. The 1991 up to 2010 models were known as mid-sized Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and starting 2011 the models became larger to be categorized as full-sized SUVs and even garnered the 2011 Truck of the Year award in North America.

Ford Explorer is considered by the experts in the auto market as a key player in the popularity of SUVs. The very first models of Ford Explorer were created in 1991 up to 1994 in two-style options, the three-door and five-door. The options for transmission include automatic four-speed and manual five speed and powered by V6 4.0 L Cologne engine. This first generation was built in Ford factories located in Kentucky and Saint Louis, Missouri, Valencia, Venezuela and Louisville. In 1995 up to 2001, another Ford Explorer models were released in the market, still with 3-door and 5-door style options. The transmission and engine selections on the other hand include 4R55E automatic four-speed, 4R70W automatic four-speed, M5OD-R1 manual five-speed and 5R55E automatic five-speed transmission and V6 4.0 L Cologne or V8 5.0 L Windsor engines. This generation of Explorer however has offered a new design of stop lamp which is made of neon light high mounted centrally in the lift gate.

After the 2nd Ford Explorer generation models comes the 3rd which were manufactured beginning 2002 up until 2005. This time, the entire line-up only displays one style which was five doors. The engines on the other hand were of three variants the traditional 4.0 L Cologne V6 as well as the 4.6 L and the Modular V8 16 valve engine. Conversely the transmission was also of various alternatives like manual M5OD-R1HD five-speed, automatic 5R55W five-speed, and automatic 5R55S five-speed. Come 2006 another Ford Explorer models were released in the market which lasted until 2010. All are in five door styles and powered by any of the following engine such as Cologne V6 4.0 liter or 4.6 liter and the 24-valve Modular V8 engines. The gearboxes options of this model then were automatic five-speed 5R55S and 6R six-speed. What takes this model apart from all other earlier version was its larger built, the presence of monitory system of tire pressure, much tougher chassis and mechanically driven collapsible seats on the third row.

The most recent Ford Explorer was released early this year, 2011. The complete line-up of these five-door automatic six-peed SUVs were built in the Chicago, Illinois manufacturing center. Engine choices for this model include the 2.0 EcoBoost 14 as well as the 3.5 Duratec V6. The built of the body is well contoured with aerodynamics coupled with tail and head lights that are stepped like in style. In addition, this newest generation was given advanced features such as mechanically driven lift gates, push button as well as remote controlled engine start, thermo regulated front seats, windshields that are sun tinted and provided with wipers that are triggered by rain and the built-in-the-dash system for navigation. The front - wheel drives along with smart all-wheel drives are the accessible power train.

Ford Explorer can be considered as one of the prevailing autos in the auto industry. This model has prevailed from its released and up until it succeeding generations. The popularity of Explorer is largely due to its affordability and steadfastness. The security system, resilience and ease of travel it can provide are very remarkable. V:18
