All About Salt Lake City Gun Story

By Dan Schweiber

Forty-eight states currently allow its residents to carry a concealed weapon. Most states have certain standards that must be met before permits to carry concealed weapons are handed out. No state give permits to those convicted of felonies, and some states will not for certain misdemeanor crimes. Some states require that residents show a valid need and make gun training mandatory. Salt Lake City's gun story is slightly different. Compared to other states, Utah's concealed weapons permit process is lax. It essentially gives them out to residents and non-residents with little proof that knowledge of the use of the weapon has been obtained.

Utah permits are recognized in thirty-one other states, making this a great resource for travelers and other businessmen to have. Safety when traveling is an important issue and makes individuals extremely vulnerable, so a concealed weapon can be an asset.

Utah does have restrictions in place when it comes to obtaining a permit. The applicant must be twenty-one years or older, and cannot have any felony convictions. There cannot be any convictions for violent crimes and no criminal conduct involving alcohol or drugs. Domestic violence is a disqualifying crime, as well as mental incompetency. No convictions for crimes of moral turpitude are allowed.

A valid drivers license, a good photograph of yourself, a fingerprint card taken by trained personnel, and a weapons familiarity certificate are needed to obtain the concealed carry permit. The familiarity certificate must be signed by an instructor in order for it to be valid.

There will be fees that you will need to pay, and an FBI background check will be done. It usually takes about sixty days for the application to be approved and cleared. Your license will then be issued and is then good for five years.

The lack of gun training has been what most protesters disagree on. Utah did not require its own residents or those from out of state to visit a shooting range to familiarize themselves with their weapon. There was concern about safety and accidental death due to misuse of weapons. Utah now requires its out of state applicants to hold a permit to carry from their own state before they can obtain a permit from Utah. This solves the gun training issue for the individuals from out of state, if their state demands gun training.

When permits are obtained from Utah, other states lose money from their own residents, so the claim has been made that much of the controversy was about money. Safety is also a driving concern among the population. The idea of untrained individuals carrying concealed weapons is a worry for some. Utah is also the only state that still allows guns to be carried on school campuses.

The Salt Lake City gun story is an interesting one, in that it involved several states, and the amendment of policies that affected a lot of individuals. It made it mandatory for some to gain firearms training, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it made some state residents grumble at the fact that they now had to pay a higher price to obtain a permit from their own state, instead of a cheaper one from Utah.
