The Best Spots For Cycling In Europe

By Eric Simmons

As a cyclist one is always looking for new jaunts. Cycling in Europe can be a vastly enjoyable experience whose memory can last forever. In this respect a list of nice places to visit when on a cycling hiatus will not go amiss. The initial place to visit is of course Greece. The Peloponnese would be ideal for just this purpose. If you get tired of the terrain then you can do Sparta instead. All the while sampling the spicy dishes of Greece.

Should you yearn for more variety then the Picos de Europa in Spain would be ideal for you instead. In Spain most people would opt for the Pyrenees but this is not to mean that you should not try Picos. This is simply because the scenery is breathtaking and the weather adds to it when it is not too wet.

No tour of Europe is complete without a visit to the The Dolomites in Italy. The cyclists competing in the Giro d Italia tour like it because of its capital; the Cortina d Ampezzo. Should you tire of the pasta and fine wine however, maybe the English countryside will favor you. Here, the roads are less hectic and more flat than their European counterparts.

Still in England one could decide to cycle in the South Downs. The track is ideal because of the lack of vehicles distracting the riders. You could opt for the steep side if you are daring or even coast on the gentler and easier side of the hill. The smaller paths on the side of the ridges and the unusually nice weather make for idyllic riding.

Ireland has a cycling heritage that would make anyone proud. Even though these cyclists did not hail from the western area of the country, this area will be accommodating to the cyclists because they are used to them. The Beara, Iveragh and Dingle peninsulas are the best as well as the limestone landscape of the Burren area.

Surprisingly, Belgium is a spot that is well suited to cycling expeditions. Anyone who knows of the Tour of Flanders and Liege-Bastogne-Liege will tell you so. One can only imagine that the cobbled hills of the country and the scenery are what are alluring about it. For scenery follow the Liege route and for athleticism the Ardennes are what you want.

As a matter of tradition the Alps must be mentioned too. Even the dimmest of characters have heard of the Tour de France which happens in this locale. Other places of note are the Alpe d Huez, the Col de Galibier, and the Col d Izoard that may not be as rough but will still not leave you wanting for anything.

The Pyrenees in France are also a popular destination for cyclists. The climb is lower than the others but is still a challenge because of the steepness. While there one can try the Col d Aspin and the Col du Tourmalet for size.

These are only a few of the tours one can take cycling in Europe. From the scenery of the Alps to the hilliness of the Yorkshire Dales one finds what they want and more here. No cyclist can claim to be bored on these tours.
