Bow Hunting for Whitetail Deer: Easy Guide

By Jim Jacobs

It usually is very challenging to employ a bow to hunt whitetail deer, but many hunters believe that it is very rewarding.

Bows require a hunter to come very close to their targets, which takes a different discipline. Rifles can sight from 50 to 500 yards, although a bow hunter needs to take his shot as close as 20 yards away. While this range requires an approach that rifle hunters don't need to consider, the principles of the hunt do not change.

Be aware of your target: learn whatever you can about whitetail deer. Knowledge gives you an advantage when you finally go out to hunt them. While not really popular to a lot of hunters, reading books on whitetail deer can improve your hunting skills. Experienced whitetail deer hunters are also an important resource in learning about them, whether from books or lectures.

Learn about your hunting area: while it sounds like common sense to do this, at times some hunters forget or don't realize its importance. Give importance to learning about the region of your hunt. When money and time allows, allow yourself to go to the hunting area to uncover key areas so that you are prepared.

A hunter should realize that, whenever you hunt a deer, the deer know the area intimately, and you ought to do all you are able to minimize their advantage.

Equip yourself correctly: there are many different options when selecting a bow and the choices can make it difficult to choose. The bottom line is how the bow is comfortable to you. You may need to make adjustments to your bow to make it more tuned to you, take many practice sessions to shoot targets, etc. Being more comfortable with your bow means you aren't distracted by it, which gives you an edge in your hunt for whitetail deer.

Take Practice Time: Familiarity only comes with time and practice, without practice you can't become familiar with your bow. With sufficient practice, handling your bow can become second-nature, like taking a breath before you release your shot. The worst thing that may happen could be for you to successfully stalk a deer and then miss the shot as you didn't take the time to practice.
