The blacktail deer is one of the most popular game animals. The black tip of their tails provides them with their name. Though smaller when compared with the whitetail deer, blacktails have been found to grow to sizes worthy of trophies. Blacktail deer are not usually considered to possess such trophy potential, however some areas breed blacktail deer that grow antler that reach over twenty inches up to thirty inches.
Blacktail deer were first classified as a subspecies of mule deer, though experts have recently declared them a totally different species. As relatives of whitetail and mule deer, there are some similarities, but also definite differences.
One major difference between the blacktail deer and its cousins is that the antlers found on blacktail deer don't directly relate with the body mass of the individual deer, whereas among whitetail and mule deer, body mass is a clear factor for antler size. Another such difference is that larger blacktail deer can be found by heading south, but in order to find larger whitetail or mule deer, you must travel north.
Blacktail deer are found mostly in British Columbia, western Oregon, Washington and northern California, stretching north into the Alaskan panhandle. Nevertheless, Boone and Crockett identifies the boundaries of the Columbian blacktail to extend from central British Columbia, south to Monterey Bay in California. While blacktails are located in other areas, Boone and Crockett recognizes only these boundaries because of the possibilities of cross breeding between mule deer and blacktail deer in other areas.
Blacktail hunters all agree that hunting blacktail deer can be quite difficult. Blacktails are even considered by some hunters as being more complicated to hunt when compared to whitetails; this is usually not regarded as because blacktail are inherently more intelligent.
One reason behind the difficulty is that blacktail hunting season occurs through the months of July to October, where the temperature is high. Because of this blacktail rarely move much in the daytime, causing them to be even more difficult to spot, instead preferring to move at night when it is cooler.
The heat will also cause much discomfort to hunters, and contributes to a more difficult hunt.
