Learn The Road Rules Before Cycling In Europe

By Eric Simmons

When cycling in Europe make sure to follow all of the rules of the road because Europeans take bike safety seriously. In some European countries more people ride bikes than drive cars which is understandable given the high price of gasoline. In this country gas prices are very high but in Europe the cost of gas makes car driving a luxury for many people who choose to ride their bikes to work or to the market rather than driving their car.

Many Europeans are in very good physical shape because they bike regularly and biking is an excellent exercise. Being stuck in rush hour traffic sitting in an automobile is a foreign concept to many Europeans. Most Europeans are used to riding their bikes to work and do not have to deal with the stress of traffic jams.

One of the finest countries to bike ride is Denmark because the country is flat. There are virtually no hills or mountains in Denmark so there are no uphill traverses. In Denmark the bicycle has the right of way and an automobile driver will be heavily fined if he has an accident with a bicyclist.

Just because the bicycle rider has the right of way in Denmark does not absolve the bicyclist from responsibility. The bike rider has to follow traffic rules or else he is subject to a stiff fine. The reason why bike riders have an enjoyable riding experience in Denmark is because both automobile drivers and bike riders abide by the rules of the road.

The cyclist must ride only in bike paths when bike paths are available and must ride in single file when using the bike path. The left side of the lane is for passing other cyclists who are traveling slower than the other cyclists. The cyclist who does not obey the rules of the road will be fined by police and will be chastised by other cyclists.

Bike riders who travel through Danish cities must ride on the right side of the street and must cross the road only at intersections when the traffic light is green. Bike riders must signal their turns and pay attention to traffic lights, the smaller lights on the traffic light poles, specifically used to direct bicycle traffic. The traffic lights keep traffic running smoothly and are used to keep bike riders, pedestrians, and automobile drivers safe.

There is no bike riding on the walking streets where pedestrian traffic has the right of way. The bike rider must walk his bike and must not board his bike until he is out of the walking street. The biker faces a heavy fine if he rides through the walking street and faces the chastisement of the Danish pedestrians using the walking street at the time the cyclist is breaking the law.

Cycling in Europe is a wonderful way to visit new lands and experience new cultures first hand. The bicycle is the number one means of transportation in many European countries. The price of gas in Europe makes automobile driving a luxury which is why many Europeans ride their bike to work. Before cycling through European cities such as the Danish city of Copenhagen, study the bike safety rules because most Europeans take seriously bicycle safety.
