Mayor of London`s Sky Ride

By Ray Darke

On September 4th the fifth annual London Skyride took place and many visitors and residents of London came to join in the event. British Cycling and Sky now run the event which used to be known as the London Freewheel, helping the mayor of London promote cycling in the city. With the influx of visitors coming to London hotels and other businesses enjoyed extra trade as a result of the event.

By 2013 the goal of London Skyride is to have one million more people cycling on a regular basis than there are now. Events are taking place throughout the country to promote cycling as a great activity for both leisure and as a means of transport.

There will be another event next year which begs the question why not stay in one of the many west end hotels, bring or rent a bike and join in the fun? People of all ages and cycling skills came this year and rode around the route at their own pace taking in many of the capital's iconic sights along the way such as Big Ben, the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London and London Bridge. The route is 15 kilometres long and remains traffic free between 10am and 4pm.

With entertainment on route as well as crowds of spectators adding to the atmosphere the general public and celebrities who took part in the bike ride were able to ride on traffic free streets around the west end hotels, shops and sights without having to worry about the cars and buses which usually fill the streets. There were 55,000 people riding their bikes this year.

In addition to the actual cycle ride information centres were set up in the parks to encourage people to try cycling more often, with advice on hand for those who wanted tips on riding a bike again after a long time or for those wanting help with bike maintenance. The atmosphere was lively and friendly.

With buskers and other entertainers on street corners there was entertainment for the cyclists and the spectators along the way. The atmosphere of the city was completely different without the constant noise of traffic and even those who happened to be staying in London's West End hotels on holiday were able to enjoy the city in this unique way.

Other traffic free cycling events take place in cities around Britain, as well as cycling events to raise money for charities. There are a variety of events to choose from, some routes more challenging than others. Altogether this extra publicity and increased awareness makes the goal of one million new cyclists seem totally achievable.

Each year that it has been held more people have joined in the London Skyride and with all these extra people taking to the traffic free streets it is a win-win situation for the organisers, the Mayor and for places to stay in London like Kensington hotels as well as businesses all of whom benefit from the many visitors arriving in the city for the event.
