Mountain Bike Types - All Mountain Bikes Are A Large Selling Category

Mountain bikes share many similarities with conventional road bikes but are specifically designed to raise performance and durability in rough, off-road terrain. They come in many different shapes, sizes and designs. To help people navigate through the many selections, various categories have been established. Across the full range of mountain bike types - all mountain bikes are commonly known as trail bicycles.

Trail bicycles are solid workhorses that perform well in a wide variety of settings, both off-road and urban. Their rugged style and sturdy good looks lend them broad appeal. Cycles that fall into this category are just as durable jumping over rocks and roots as over kerbs and gutters.

Although they are light, trail bicycles tend to be slightly heavier than a road bike, and even the average trail bicycle, because of their strength. Despite their weight, they are nevertheless designed to climb hills efficiently.

Trail riding is a sport for individuals. It requires personal endurance, balance, core strength, bike handling skills and repairs self-reliance. Advanced riders pursue steep technical descents with many dirt pumps and jumps, obstacles such as rock outcrops and tree roots. The combination of pedaling, mental concentration, plus upper body fatiguing due to shocks and jolts combine to make the sport a taxing one.

The sport demands physical endurance, balance and bike handling skills. As the sport has grown and developed, specialist fields have emerged including dirt jumping, free riding, downhill riding, trail riding, street riding and cross country (XC). Each of these forms of riding require a different combination of skills.

In addition to the above XC features, the AM segment usually involves units that are stronger frame and components. They include more travel for front fork shock suspension with about 125-180 millimeters (5-7 inches) of squish. Some AM models provide for similar rear suspension.

In summary, mountain bike types - all mountain bikes included, have front fork or dual suspension. Units fitted with rear suspension are known as soft tails. The wheel diameter is typically 26 inches, although 27.5 and 29 inch models are also available. Wheel width ranges from 1.7 to 2.5 inches. Handlebars are wider than on road bikes and are flat or upward sloping to allow a more upright riding position given that balance rather than speed is the critical factor.
