Why choose a road bike?

By Harriet Appleton

There are a huge amount of factors involved in choosing a new bike. Price is a big one, obviously, but there are many other things you should keep in mind as well. First and foremost, you need to be thinking about what exactly you will be using your bike for. Is it just an everyday bike used for travelling to and fro work? Or are you intending to keep it locked up until the weekend and then tear it round the countryside?

If you answered yes to the latter, then clearly some sort of mountain bike is a better option for you, but if you answered yes to the former, and you are looking for a healthier, faster way of getting to where you need to go, then a road bike is for you. There are many reasons why a road bike is better suited as a form of transport, and this article will explain why that is.

One of the big reasons they are advantageous is the fact that they are lighter, and often much cheaper. Mountain bikes have suspension forks which are necessary for riding across bumpy off road tracks, but for road riding are a completely unnecessary expense and extra weight. They also have big thick tyres for gripping soft ground and resisting sharp angular ground, along with the amount of gears they have for the varied gradients they have to deal with, all of which would add unnecessary weight and price to your purchase if you are just going to be riding on roads.

Another important reason why road bikes are preferable in this circumstance is that they make riding on roads incredibly easy. They are much lighter and their tyres are especially suited to tarmac, making a smooth and fast road wherever you been to get to. Racing bikes also have low-rise handle bars, allowing you to get into the optimum position both for making your body less resistant to the wind, and making pedalling much easier.

There are some negatives about road bikes, the main one being that the lightweight tyres are much more prone to puncture than the thicker tyres found on off road bikes, especially when riding in urban areas where you may come across broken glass. If you pay a little extra for some puncture proof tyres, however, then this will not be a problem for you. You will have to pay more upfront, but it will pay for itself in the amount of time and money you will save not having to buy or use puncture repair kits.
