By Winifred Cassell

Many people have turned to longterm food storage as a way of preparing for emergency situations. It involves buying and storing various foods that will be needed in times of unpleasant happenings like flooding, wars and earthquakes. To keep the supply from getting spoilt, they could be preserved in ways like canning, freeze drying, freezing, and dehydrating.

When planning to store foodstuff for a long time, it is necessary to budget some amount of money towards it every month. Some persons may however decide to make a one time purchase. Buying at once will take off the stress so one does not have to worry about it in the future. Besides, it is cheaper buying in bulk so one gets to save money on the large purchase. However, this could tell on the monthly budget as there may not be enough money for other needs. Buying in stages will be easier on the monthly budget, though it may cost more when all the expenses are put together.

Canned and dry foods are major items to buy. Containers will be needed to store grains. It will be wiser to consume the supplies in the order in which they were bought. This is possible if all containers are dated.

Up to fourteen gallons of water is required by an adult in a space of two weeks. This fact must be noted when storing up water. However, it has a long shelf life as it can last up to twelve months. It should be stored in gallons or big jars.

Some vital items to add to a long term plan of storing provisions include whole grains like oats, corn and barley, as well as pastas like noodles and spaghetti. Others are cooking oils and fats, and also sweeteners like sugar, honey and maple syrup. Cereals, rice, beans, salt, frozen meats and fish, milk powder, cheese, butter, and frozen dried fruits and vegetables should also be added.

Longterm food storage is a way of preparing for future times of crisis. It helps to manage foodstuff wastage and reduce the burden of getting provisions in such critical times. All foodstuff items should be stored in a refrigerator that uses little power. Temperatures could be set at 55 degrees.
