A Quick Look At Security Dogs

By Heinz Kaufmann

German Shepherds today are trained to aid police officers in certain law enforcement operations. They were mainly used as protectors in the 19th century and later on for doing rounds along dark alleys of the city. During the 1800s they were used to chase law offenders. Fast forward to the present, due to the development in breeding, training methods and behavior management, German Shepherd has become an inevitable part of the police force.

Police dogs are usually called K9 a title which is a homophone of canine. Really the police dogs are also protected by law and intentional killing and injuring of dogs is punishable under law. Furthermore police dogs are given an official funeral if they are killed in the line of duty.

For those assigned to high-risk missions including drug syndicate ambush, bomb searches and felon chases are given the right security and wear Kevlar vests. Top performers are even given badges and given specific titles.

The purpose and function of the German Shepherd as police dogs is multifarious. It is used as search and rescue dog because of the keen sense of smell. Not only can they track down people but they can also sniff out certain materials like explosives and drugs if they are trained perfectly. The dogs are also used for public order enforcement. At first they were just trained how to chase down a criminal and then bark profusely to make fear thereby making sure the criminal does not slip away.

However, now the canine can actually hold down the criminal because it is trained with different techniques on grabbing parts of the human body without wounding the person. They make wonderful companions and are friendly and healthy hence bonding with the police officers that they are associated with. Another fine quality of the German Shepherd Dogs is that they can sniff out decaying bodies underwater also. As the detection dog the illegal substances can also be traced by it. Since the dogs are very common around the world they do not startle passengers at airports or other locations.

Probably the discipline to have benefited from the German Shepherds' skill to detect rotten bodies is forensic science. Really, Dr. Debra Komar of the University of Alberta along with the RCMP Civilian Search Dog Association, developed a method to K9 training. This changed the usual role of K9s as merely attack and protector dogs.

Police dogs that become pregnant are made to stop working. The same goes with those who are too weak and old to perform their duties.

German Shepherds was first used in 1859 as law enforcement helpers in Continental Europe. During that time, they performed as protectors of patrollers in Belgium. But dogs of that time were very wild and most people were afraid of them.

As it was observed that these dogs can play a great role in keeping peace and order, other European countries decided to make use of German Shepherds in their law enforcing activities - Germany, Hungary, Austria and France to name a few of them.
