Safe cycling: Riding on the roads

By Josh Lee

When you get your very first bike, you will probably be so enthusiastic that you will want to ride it as soon as possible and everywhere you go. You should take into account the practical aspects to rising, however, and one of the more important of those factors is safety. Like any vehicle, they are obligated to abide by the same road laws as any other vehicle.

You can cycle anywhere you would like to go but that doesn't mean that any environment you ride in is a safe one. You should know the area when you plan to cycle even though other vehicle operators may not be aware. You should stay away from roads with narrow shoulders as well as ones with blind corners.

You will see roads along your travels which will reveal some stunning scenery and which are rarely used. And the fact that they are rarely used means in this way, they will be safer. Find out about such roads so you can ride in safer environments but be aware that some may be used by big trucks or lorries.

It is a good idea to be aggressive when you ride most of the time as it will give you more control over the road. This will help to keep you safer when there is a lot fo traffic present. You could keep a low profile which can be advantageous as motorists can seem to act as an enemy at times. If they refuse to get out of your way, don't try and compete with them as you won't stand much of a chance. Let it go and ride along the clear path you will have once it is out of your way.

You may be the only, or one of a few cyclists on the road at times, and so some vehicles may not take you into consideration. That may extend to them being in the mindset that they won't take any cyclists into account at all which is the main reason being cycling accidents. So be sure to remain as visible as you can by wearing bright colours as well as being illuminated at night.
