Ski Beginners - Why Indoor Skiing May Be The Place To Start

By Oliver Fish

You first skiing holiday can be a brilliant and unique experience. There is simply nothing like taking to the slopes for the very first time, gliding down the mountain on the fresh snow. However it may be several days into the holiday before you are confident enough to be able to tackle the bigger slopes as you will most likely have to pay for beginner's sessions to learn to ski before taking on the red and black slopes.

However, there are ways of improving your skiing ability before even getting on the plane. Taking lessons in the UK will get you familiar with a pair of skis rather than learning it all once you get there and gives you the added bonus of not feeling insecure amongst the more experienced skiers within your party.

But how do you go about skiing in a country that doesn't really have snow and mountains for you to go and practice on? While the UK does have a notoriously volatile weather system, there is only ever really snow for a couple of weeks each year, and there certainly are not many mountains about that are suitable for skiing even if the snow cover was right.

Lucky for us there are several places around the UK which offer the chance to ski indoors. Dotted around some of Britain's cities are some very oddly shaped buildings which, in fact, are home to indoor ski slopes. They have the ability to artificially recreate the weather conditions to help you practice in the same conditions you'll find up in the mountains.

These centres which include locations such as the "Chill Factor E" at the Trafford Centre in Manchester as well as the Xscape chain in various locations throughout the UK, offer lessons as well as a chance to experience some freestyle practice for yourself. The instructors can teach people of varying abilities from absolute beginner to those who simply want to touch up on their skills. It is simply the best way to prepare for your skiing holiday.
