Ski shops and even the terrain often have signs to indicate the trail is for experts, or beginners, etc. The trails will be labeled as Green Circle, Blue Square and Black Diamond, which say what the safety and skill level are. A lot of skiing accidents happen when the skier is distracted for a short period of time. So pay attention and concentrate on the ski trail and controlling your skis.

People who have met with disaster or death on the mountain often do so because they were ill prepared for changing circumstances. The fact that weather is so unpredictable should clue you in to the fact that you don't want to fool with it for any reason under any circumstance. How prepared you need to be depends heavily on the location you will be in whether populated or isolated. Make sure you wear clothes that are lightweight and layers for warmth.

Calling the ski shops nearby for information can help you be more prepared for the terrain as well as the weather on the mountian you will be skiing. It is recommended that you get a buddy for skiing in desolate areas. If you don't have someone else with you when you have an accident, this can put you in a dangerous situation. When you have a ski buddy, both of you can monitor the other as you are skiing. If you are in an isolated location, you really must have your plan ready before you attempt to ski. Plan to meet in a specific place if you are ever split from each other. Most likely your cell phones will not work in the wilderness. You may want to think about carrying radios instead. Also, it would be wise to take along GPS devices where you can plan your places to meet up.

No matter what happens, make sure to plan for dangerous situations. These are just a few of the many possible situations you can encounter while skiing. You want to have as much fun as you can, but at the same time you must think about skiing safety tips and strategies. We recommend that you create a plan because it is easier to react when you are in a safe environment.
