If you love the outdoors and often go hiking in the woods, it is inevitable that at one point or another, you will cross paths with a bear. While these creatures look ridiculously adorable, they can be fierce and are perfectly capable of attacking and killing humans. You can always run for your life, but chances are, the bear will be able to catch up.

The only way you can protect yourself from a bear is to bring a weapon. Firearms like shotguns and rifles are an option but nowadays killing bears is a criminal offense and many forests have protected areas where shooting animals is prohibited. Besides, it takes skill in using guns and if a bear was charging towards you, can you stay calm and focused on getting a good aim? And can you think clearly as to shoot at the right parts of the bear that will render him immobile? Remember, bears are tough. A single shot may not stop them but rather aggravate them even more to kill you. Big mistake!

So what is the alternative to firearms when you plan on protecting yourself from a bear? The answer is the weapon we commonly use on humans: pepper spray. But for something like a bear there is a special type of pepper spray. This is usually a much bigger canister and capable of spraying the nasty liquid from a much better range. This will enable you do deal a blow to the bear without harming it while making it writhe in pain, a very effective way of stopping a bear.

How does bear pepper spray work?

Capsaicin and other capsaicinoids are the active components present in Oleoresin Capsicum. More normally called OC, it is a natural, resin-like substance that is contained in chili peppers. These bear pepper sprays, containing OC, will cause a quick yet impermanent burning sensation on the skin as well as a tearing, painful, swelling of the eyes. Upon inhalation of OC, the mucus membranes that line the respiratory tract begin to swell. This makes breathing difficult and prohibits the bear from further attacking you. This gives you time to escape and ask for help.

And since the effects are temporary this makes the pepper spray a better option than guns. The irritation caused by the liquid will start to fade after 30 minutes or depending on the strength of the product. The only reason to worry about pepper spray is that it can cause permanent damage to the eyes. So never forget to be careful with this weapon.

Now that you realize the importance of bear pepper sprays, it is about time to get yourself one. Danger comes in different forms and it is better to prevent yourself from falling victim to accidents which could have been otherwise prevented. By carrying your very own bear pepper spray; you can explore and enjoy hiking in the great outdoors with a calm and peaceful mind.
