Cape Cod is one of the top striped bass fishing destinations along the East Coast. Certain beaches fish better than other beaches depending on the time of the year. For folks fishing during the spring run, knowing which beaches produce best can help to put more striped bass onto the sand. Falmouth's Old Silver beach is an early May hot spot for small and keeper size striped bass.
In the spring, the south side of Cape Cod and Buzzard's Bay experiences an influx of striped bass before Cape Cod Bay and points north. Many of the best shore bound spots are located in close proximity to bays, creeks and harbors. Focusing your striped bass fishing efforts in these areas can help get your striper season started on the right foot.
Old Silver is home to a herring run, a stretch of sand, and a boulder strewn section of beach. To the north is a calm back bay and to the south a rocky point. All this structure creates a unique hunting opportunity for opportunistic striped bass.
The majority of my striper fishing time is centered around the rocky outcroppings to the north. This is a phenomenal and exciting area for light tackle anglers.
A fairly long walk is required to access these boulders, yet the walk is almost always worth the effort.
Tides play an important role in angling success at Old Silver. Two hours before and after low tide is best for fishing the boulder field to the north. During this stage of the tide it will be easier to wade around the boulders.
I prefer to use top water plugs when fishing the boulder field-however soft plastics and swimming plugs also work quite well.
At the northernmost point of the beach is a rocky outcropping that separates Old Silver from a secluded and tranquil back bay. I like to position myself out on this rocky outcropping so that I can cast a plug into the channel entering the bay. If the wind isn't blowing too hard, it is often possible to reach the red nun buoy marking the southern edge of the channel.
Always keep a close eye on the stage of the tide when fishing this area. The tide can move in quickly in this area. Due to the structure along the beach this is certainly not an area to push the limit with the tide.
Early May is one of the best times to target striped bass at Old Silver. Most of the fish will be on the small side, however there are occasionally some bigger stripers mixed in.
Some years bluefish can be found mixed in a long with the bass at Old Silver. However if you are hoping to target bluefish, then try fishing at South Cape beach in Mashpee.
