Fishing Snap Swivels Provide Anglers A Bit More Of An Edge

By Cathleen Lara

A fishing snap swivel is a compact device that many anglers feel gives them a helpful edge to make sure that big one does not get away. The device is fixed to the line up at the hook end. It is a small unit made-up of two, sometimes three, rings that are each connected to a pivot point. The device is made from brass or stainless steel. The pivot point is either barrel-shaped or ball-shaped and sometimes uses ball-bearings to help it twirl.

The device is designed to help a fishing line untwirl itself as it is being rewound back onto the reel. This untwirling helps avoid tangles, a feature that is especially useful for anglers using monofilament lines. The devices also stop a sinker from slipping up the line, far away from the hook.

Fixing the device to a line is a two-stage process. First, take the line fixed to the reel and tie a knot to the device. Second, take the hook length and use it to tie a knot to the other end of the device.

The devices are made with a clip, similar to that of a safety-pin. This clip links to one of the connection rings. The clip permits a lure to be conveniently affixed to the device.

Some anglers avoid using swivels when chasing big, hard-fighting fish. Fixing the device to a line introduces a weak spot and raises the risk of line failure while landing the fish. A small point perhaps, but it can make the difference to ensure that big one does not get away.

In summary, fishing snap swivels can be a helpful godsend. They also come with three rings connected to a pivoting point. These three-way devices provide an extra connection point. This permits an additional lure or extra length of line to be fixed to the main line. This setup is favored when targeting certain species.
