Learn To Ski Closer To Home

By Oliver Fish

If someone told you that you could enjoy a unique skiing experience within an alpine environment, surrounded by thick snow right here in the UK, many of you would probably refuse to believe it. However up in Scotland's highest peaks, their snow sports industry is already celebrating its 50th anniversary.

In fact the country's snow sports industry is currently celebrating its 50th year since the first chairlift was installed, and despite the mild weather is expecting another busy season with 4000 people a day at each of the five resorts.

An affordable place to train
For those longing for the real thing rather than a dry ski slope, the Scottish Highlands offer a brilliant place to learn skiing for the first time or to simply practice your skills. Although the resorts may not be as high or long as their European counterparts, they still provide all the facilities you can expect to find at almost any resort including runs, lifts, tutorials and ski-hire. Read on to find out more about the Scottish ski centres.

Carinigorm Ski Resort
Many people regard Carinigorm as Scotland's best-known and most spectacular ski centre. There are 12 lifts available to take you to the top as well as Scotland's only funicular train which serves seven green runs, six blue, eight red and one black slope.

However if snowboarding is more your thing then Cairngorm snow park offers boarders the chance to freestyle and practice tricks.

Glencoe Resort
Opening in 1956, Glencoe is recognised as the home of Scottish skiing. Over recent years it has attracted more daredevil skiers and snowboarders as it provides the steepest piste range in the country including the Flypaper.

Gleenshee Resort
This is the largest ski resort in the UK with 25 miles of ski slopes to enjoy as well as 30 miles of lanes for cross-country skiers. The resort provides facilities which could rival many of the smaller continental resorts.

Lecht
If you're a first timer or an early beginner then Lecht is a great resort to pick up the basic skills. The 12 mile terrain includes seven blue slopes for beginners as well as a large 'nursery' area for those stepping onto skis for the first time. Lecht also attracts many racers with its own timed race piste and Rapid slalom poles.

The Nevis Range
This is Scotland's latest ski resort with modern features to maintain snow levels throughout the season. Located by the UK's largest peak, Ben Nevis, the range boasts stunning views of the mountain range as well as a large expanse of off-piste areas for free riding.
